International theological accreditation, recognition and quality assurance
About the ITAA

About Us

The International Theological Accreditation Association (ITAA) provides independent theological accreditation, promoting transparency, institutional quality and student protection.

Who we are

The International Theological Accreditation Association (ITAA) exists to protect students by encouraging transparent, ethical, and high-quality theological education. ITAA provides independent theological accreditation and independent quality assurance for theological and ministry-focused institutions worldwide.   Our work is governed by clear, documented policies that prioritise student protection, truthful public information and institutional continuous improvement. We assess institutions against standards covering governance, academic provision, student support, financial stability and learning outcomes.   We are privileged as a faith-based accrediting body, the International Theological Accreditation Association, to be recognised by the Council for Education Quality & Accreditation (CEQA).   Through this review, ITAA upholds internationally aligned quality benchmarks for theological instruction while maintaining full autonomy over doctrinal and religious standards.

We welcome applications from all Christian educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities, seminaries, Bible schools, theological institutes, ministry training centres, and Christian distance-learning and online education providers.

Newly established institutions, or those that do not yet meet all our requirements, are also welcome to apply for foundational-level recognition. Through ITAA’s assistance programme, these institutions receive guidance to develop the structures, policies, and academic standards needed to progress towards full accreditation. Foundational recognition is a supported development pathway.

Core principles and purpose

ITAA operates on the following core principles: student-first protection; accreditation as a quality-assurance process rather than a marketing tool; institutional rankings that measure the maturity of systems and governance and support for continuing institutional improvement.

What accreditation means with ITAA

Accreditation with ITAA is an independent, non-governmental judgement that an institution meets defined standards for governance, academic quality and student support. Our Levels (Foundational, Developing, Established) communicate the maturity of institutional systems and governance. Accreditation does not confer governmental recognition, or replace any local licensing or registration requirement. Institutions remain responsible for holding any licences, registrations or approvals required by their national or local authorities before issuing qualifications.

Our Mission

At the International Theological Accreditation Association (ITAA), our purpose is to ensure that institutions offering theological education uphold and promote excellence in both academic rigor and spiritual formation. We believe that theological education should not only impart knowledge but also transform lives through the power of the Gospel, enabling students to become Christ-centered leaders in ministry and beyond.

Our Core Values

Biblical Faithfulness: We ensure that every institution we accredit holds fast to the unchanging truth of Scripture, teaching sound doctrine and preparing students for ministry in accordance with biblical standards. Academic Excellence: We maintain high academic standards for theological institutions, ensuring that programs develop critical thinking, theological depth, and practical ministry skills. Spiritual Formation: Beyond academic knowledge, we emphasize the importance of spiritual maturity, cultivating personal holiness, and a passion for the Great Commission. Global Community: We unite institutions worldwide, fostering a sense of shared purpose in advancing the Kingdom of God through education and ministry training.

Our Vision

Our vision is to see a global network of Christian educational institutions that prepare individuals for service in ministry, missions, and the marketplace. We seek to empower institutions to develop leaders who will advance the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. This is done through: Faith-Driven Accreditation: We are committed to Christ-centered education and ensure that accredited institutions share this commitment. Rigorous Standards: Our accreditation process is designed to ensure that institutions meet high academic and theological standards while remaining accessible to students.

Institutional responsibilities

Every institution accredited by ITAA must:
  1. Maintain accurate and current public information about its legal status, programmes and awards.
  2. Comply with all applicable national, provincial/state, regional and local laws governing operation and awarding of qualifications.
  3. Operate quality-assurance systems that meet ITAA standards and notify ITAA promptly of significant changes.
  4. Not imply governmental recognition where none exists.
ITAA reserves the right to investigate misuse of accreditation or misleading claims and to suspend, withdraw, or amend accreditation where appropriate.

Student protection and transparency

ITAA accreditation exists primarily for the protection and benefit of students. We aim to increase transparency, communicate institutional maturity, encourage continuous improvement, and help prospective students make informed choices. Accreditation status should be used to explain the scope and limits of ITAA recognition, not to inflate institutional reputation.

How we relate to CEQA and other frameworks

ITAA aligns its policies with recognised quality-assurance principles. As described on our site, ITAA works with the Council for Education Quality & Accreditation (CEQA) framework for shared policy alignment and to ensure baseline standards of assessment and governance are applied consistently where CEQA is referenced.
