Educational content
The International Theological Accreditation Association (ITAA) requires that accredited and applicant institutions maintain clear, accessible, and adequately resourced student support and welfare arrangements. These arrangements must prioritise student protection, academic progress, and pastoral care while complying with all applicable national, state/provincial, regional, and local laws.
Core institutional expectations include:
- Published student support policy: A clearly worded policy available to applicants and enrolled students describing available services, eligibility, accessibility, confidentiality limits, complaint avenues, and emergency contacts.
- Academic support: Systems for learning guidance, reasonable adjustments for documented needs, assessment support, progression monitoring, and academic integrity processes linked to student welfare.
- Pastoral and wellbeing services: Pastoral care consistent with the institution's doctrinal identity, and referrals to qualified mental‑health or crisis services where appropriate.
- Student information and induction: Routine induction materials and ongoing information so students understand institutional policies, assessment rules, fees and refunds, and external recognition limits.
- Complaints and appeals: A fair, transparent complaints and appeals procedure, with defined timeframes, impartial decision‑makers, and escalation steps including external review where available under local law.
- Safeguarding and duty of care: Risk assessment and safeguarding measures for vulnerable students, including verified staff training and reporting pathways compliant with local legal obligations.
- Records and privacy: Secure recordkeeping for student cases, support provision and reasonable adjustments, consistent with applicable privacy law.
Operational requirements include documented roles and responsibilities, staff training, accessible contact points, and mechanisms to review effectiveness. Institutions must keep public information current and evidence decisions about learner support during ITAA reviews.
ITAA emphasises that the following foundational legal and policy rules apply to all institutions:
- ITAA is a private theological accreditation agency.
- ITAA is not a governmental accreditation authority.
- ITAA accreditation never overrides local law.
- Institutions remain solely responsible for compliance with all applicable national, state or provincial, regional, and local laws.
- ITAA does not grant statutory degree-awarding powers.
- Accreditation status does not replace governmental recognition where required.
- Institutional rankings measure the maturity of systems and governance, not the value of a ministry, spiritual calling, ministry effectiveness, or God’s favour.
Where institutions operate across jurisdictions they must meet every local legal requirement for welfare, registration, and awarding of qualifications. ITAA accreditation assesses the existence, effectiveness and transparency of student support systems; it does not substitute for government licensing or statutory responsibilities.
Minimum evidence and institutional practice
During self‑evaluation and accreditation review institutions should supply evidence of:
- Published student support policy and student handbook.
- Records of induction and information distribution to students.
- Staff role descriptions and training records for pastoral/safeguarding duties.
- Recent case examples showing application of reasonable adjustments, complaints handling and corrective actions (with identifying information redacted).
- Data on student progression, retention, and outcomes as they relate to support interventions.
ITAA assesses systems proportionately to institutional size and ranking level (Foundational, Developing, Established). Institutions should demonstrate continuous improvement cycles for student welfare, including measurable outcomes and stakeholder feedback.
Implementation checklist for institutions
Quick institutional checklist:
- Publish a single‑page student support summary and a full handbook.
- Designate a named student welfare officer and deputy with published contact points.
- Run regular staff training on safeguarding, data privacy and academic adjustments.
- Maintain a documented complaints and appeals workflow with outcome records.
- Include student welfare metrics in governance reporting and annual reviews.
These measures protect students, improve institutional practice, and facilitate positive outcomes during ITAA review cycles.
Important notes for students and applicants
Prospective and current students should confirm the following before enrolment: the institution's legal status in its country, the limits of external recognition for qualifications, published refund and complaint procedures, and available pastoral or wellbeing supports. Students may verify claims via ITAA's public register and the institution's published evidence.
ITAA cannot intervene in matters of institutional non‑compliance where local law or statutory processes apply; students should seek local legal advice or contact appropriate statutory bodies when needed.
ITAA’s Role
The International Theological Accreditation Association (ITAA) provides independent theological accreditation focused on student protection, institutional transparency and the maturity of governance systems. ITAA evaluates whether institutions have effective, documented student support and welfare arrangements and whether public information about those arrangements is accurate. ITAA does not grant governmental recognition, does not confer statutory degree‑awarding powers, and cannot override local law.
